Suitably Soul Nourishing

It is difficult to decide what is more spectacular, the breathtaking views of the Italian Dolomites beyond the floor to ceiling windows of the Schgagular or the incredible design space within! Nestled in the quiet heritage-protected village of Castelrotto in south Tyrol, the Schgagular Hotel makes a bold statement. With its strong architectural identity of sloping roofs and white facades evoking the geology of the surrounding mountains, complete with show stopping views tapering out towards the nearby Sciliar mountain, the Schgagular hotel is rapidly becoming a contemporary architectural landmark.

The Milan-based studio, Peter Pichler Architecture is responsible for reimagining the traditional Alpine hotel and has created a rich spatial concept that combines natural  materials, clean modern lines, and glass. Striking textured wooden walls, a neutral colour palette and tactile fabrics are deployed throughout to create a soul-nourishing space inviting in it’s innovative, avant-garde approach while at the same time remaining sensitive to its mountain setting.

The hotel's ethos is to offer a suitably relaxed atmosphere with genuine,  unassuming service. On entering the property the beautiful, glass-lined lobby encourages a natural curiosity for the impressive lounge space with an outlook that is at once arresting with the mountain landscapes taking centre stage. Carefully selected furniture and cosy textiles serve to soften the polished space while the offer of a cafe latte complemented by warm apfelstrudel gives one every reason to lounge and linger. Arguably the greatest charm of the Schgagular is that the hotel is family owned and run. The hands-on family members with their innate passion for cultural authenticity work extremely hard to ensure that a stay at the Schgagular is a truly unforgettable experience. The team at reception focus on a bespoke service for every guest and provide many tailor-made itineraries upon request. They are particularly passionate and knowledgeable about their local region and are delighted to share its secrets. Recommendations of hidden mountain restaurants serving warm seasonal dishes are so tantalising that delectable lunch stops become unavoidable! In the hotel restaurant, regional produce is combined with flair and imagination while the daughter of the family presides over every guest with the utmost care and attention to detail. Hidden away but certainly not forgotten in the lower ground floor of the hotel is the beautifully designed  wellness spa which is perfectly appointed with two indoor swimming pools, several saunas, an ice room, Melmarium and Hammam and tranquil relaxation area - the perfect place to actively rest and unwind.

The quiet town of Castelrotto has everything you need including ski and snowboard hire and  is close enough to enjoy the excellent ski terrain of the Seizer Alm/Val Gardena Dolomiti Superski  slopes, while at the same time promising the perfect post-piste relaxation retreat. Having only been recently refurbished in 2018 this superbly styled mountain retreat  is surely set to become a firm favourite of the design fraternity.

The Schgagular can be easily reached from four main airports and is just an hour and a half journey by road from Innsbruck. To find out more, visit
